Year 5 - Llywelyn

Welcome to Dosbarth Llywelyn, where there is no such thing as a typical day!

Whether we are listening, discussing and playing music with Ensemble Cymru, building Formula 1 cars to race against others, singing with the Welsh National Opera or building Minecraft Castles, Dosbarth Llywelyn is all about learning new skills and having opportunities to experience new things.

Our class teacher is Mr Derfel Thomas.

A typical day

The four purposes are the starting point for our class’s curriculum design. Ultimately, our aim is to support our learners to become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

To this end the experiences they receive in Dosbarth Llywelyn range from the creative aspects of creating ceramics, weaving and numerous crafts to learning about the ‘5 a day for our brains’, growth mindset and what we need to live a mentally healthy life. We learn about our Welsh culture through listening to Welsh folk tales and the history of Wales and become ethically aware whilst learning about ‘Fairtrade’.

We don’t have set themes in Dosbarth Llywelyn; at the beginning of the year, we ask the pupils what their interests are and what they would like to learn about and our themes grow from there. This year we have worked on the theme of Landscapes, Potions, Castles and dragons and numerous mini projects like Scratch, Adobe Express and jitterbugs. We hope to move next term to our Formula 1 project and another about bananas!

It’s all about making their time in class fun and hopefully learning a lot on the way!

We would always be glad of parent/ carer volunteers to help with reading, playing simple maths games or on visits.

Homework

For homework we have a termly project which will be found on their Google classroom. This will be a topic that they can interpret in any way they would like, from writing stories to creating models. Be as creative as you can!

Your child also has access to a number of online tools to help their leaning. There are a range of educational programmes from Google Classroom, Minecraft education to Adobe Express that they can access through the HwB website with their username and password. We also use the online platforms Reading Eggs, Easimaths and TTRockstars that have separate usernames and passwords.
